Whitchurch vs Clwb Rygbi II
8th October 2011
Fine day but blustery conditions didn’t prevent a superb game of running cup rugby from these two old Cardiff adversaries.
Early forward exchanges saw Whitchurch gain some slight advantage and the backs took the game to Clwb to test their defence. Following one of these early power struggles Whitchurch produced the first score from a break by returning centre George Wooten who almost made the line with a trade mark burst from the 10 yard line. Hauled down just short he offloaded to Ben Speraneo who crashed over.
Clwb replied with some probing forward surges but then spilled the ball. Whitchurch tried the old garyowen but clwb collected cleanly and fed speedy winger Shaun Horgan who beat three defenders and touched down under the posts.
Whitchurch rallied and pressured Clwb up the middle resulting in captain Steve Bale crashing over. The score went unconverted leaving the score 12 – 7 to Whitchurch.
Clwb Rygbi responded with a move up the left containing some deft handling that sent over Elgan Jones, converted by Owain Gwylim.
After half time with Clwb still leading 14 – 12 a forward battle ensued with little penetration from either side. With one such forward attack Clwb spilled the ball late on and Whitchurch centre Marc Lloyd scooped up the loose ball and raced away from the opposition defence to score. Convertion failed.
Whitchurch did a Wales and held out under considerable pressure to register the win.
