Whitchurch vs Caerau II
26th November 2011

Whitchurch Remain Unbeaten
Following wins over Llanrumney 2nds 24-17 and Old Illtydians 2nds 5-0 Whitchurch faced a strong Caerau Ely 2nds in an attempt to hold on to their unbeaten record in Cardiff and district league division 2.
In wet and windy conditions at Parc Caedelyn the game began with several furious forward exchanges resulting in some superb close quarter defence by both teams.
Whitchurch’s athletic pack slowly gained some territorial advantage and applied the necessary pressure for second row Owen Stinton to crash over for his first club try.
Caerau responded straight from the kick off and camped out on the Whitchurch 22 and slowly edged towards the line. Quick ball sped blind saw them equalise and in a difficult day for kickers the score remained 5-5.
With stern instructions from captain Steve Bale Whitchurch did what they do best and played a tight forward game for the next few phases and following drive after drive from outstanding flanker Dan hobbs and evergreen prop Richard Cartwright the captain himself burst over the line for his team’s second score. Again the extras flew in the wind.
Whitchurch now began to dominate the forward battle and further tries followed from No8 Ben Sperandeo and Steve Bale again.
In the second period with the strong wind at their backs Whitchurch outside half Gareth Davies probed the corners with some delicate chips and kicks to keep Caerau under pressure. With these great field positions Sperandeo breached the Caerau defence twice in the following 20 minutes to seal his hat trick.
As the game broke under appalling conditions Caerau attempted to salvage something from the game with several breakaways but the final pass never went to hand.
In the last 5 minutes following one such attack Whitchurch countered surging towards the Caerau goaline. Only one player was going to round off the afternoon with the final score and that was Sperandeo taking his try tally to a remarkable 4.
With confidence high Whitchurch travel to Cowbridge for their next game on Saturday December 3rd. about you.
